Famili : Averhoaceae
Status : Endemik Sulawesi
Description :
'The fruits of Sarrotheca celebica arc indehiscent, and red, ripening to black with
a sour taste (the local name 'ngilu-ngilu' translates as 'very sour'). They appear
to be adapted for bird dispersal, but we did not observe any birds taking them.
Fruits of Sarcotheca may occasionally be used as a food flavour or as a remedy for
coughing (Veldkamp, 1967)
In general it appeared that Sarrothero celehica was limited in its reproduction b), inadequacy of pollinators and fruit dispersers, at least during the study period. However, it flowers over a long season, and Veldkamp (1967) reported that members of the genus may flower and fruit all year. It is possible that it is pollinated more successfully at other times of year. Despite the lack of pollinators, in the study area it was a widespread and common plant, mainly appearing to colonize the edges of clearings, but surviving as mature trees in disturbed high forest. No seedlings were found in mature forest despite carefull search, and it is probable that the species can only colonise in light gaps. The \widespread disturbance in the forest caused by local people harvesting rotan has created extra gaps and has probably contributed to the abundance of the species in the forests of the study area.
